Week 9 Post 2 - Not a Crime to Be Poor By Peter Edelman

Many people are sent to jail due to lack of ability to pay fines or lack of investigation into a persons financial situation. Taking steps to solve this problem would keep more people out of jail because less would be sent for slight misdemeanors. In reality, these are rarely violent people and putting them in prison harms both them and their family.
This relates to the psychology of criminal justice because judges are often quick to assume a person has the capability to pay a $200 fee and chose to spend the money on other things when in reality they may barely have enough to afford their rent.
