Week 5 Post 2 - Judges and Jurors

A Jury is very important in deciding a case. It is their duty to decide the truth of the evidence presented. According to Ellsworth's research done in 1993, most cases begin with an initial lack of agreement about the verdict during the first deliberation, having to re-discuss many times to begin some form of agreement. A factor that can affect a jury (besides initial bias) is the media. If a defendant has not yet been identified, a court cannot restrict the information the media shares. Once a defendant has been identified, it is hoped the media will listen to the courts suggestion and not give too many details in an effort to keep the jurors less biased.
This relates to the psychology of criminal justice because who is on the jury and their thoughts/opinions will affect the outcome of the case. It is important to note that bias affects every aspect of the criminal justice system. If it is a big case, media may play a role in what the jury thinks if they see an article prior to their jury duty.
