Week 3 Post 2 - Eyewitness Accuracy

Eyewitnesses are vital in confirming a suspect was at the scene and finding their identity. Different methods can be used to do this and some are more accurate than others. Photofit can be used to have a witness piece together a face in portions to create an image of the suspect. However, many studies have shown the human brain looks at faces holistically and not piece by piece. Due to this research, Evofit was created. This technique shows the witness 72 already constructed faces, asking them to pick 6 of them that look most similar to the suspect. Based on these 6, 72 more faces are generated that look similar to those, asking them to pick 6 yet again. This technique was found to be 5 times more accurate than photofit all based on the research of viewing faces holistically from Martha Farah at the University of Pennsylvania. There are also different methods for how line-ups are shown to witnesses. It is found to be effective to show them photos one by one and simply ask if the person was at the scene, without telling the witness how many photos there will be in total.
